Named after the Latin word for tears, at first glance this Frederic Leighton painting appears to simply show a woman leaning against a column. However, look a little closer and you’ll see how every detail speaks of death and immortality: the cool colours; the fading sunset; the cypress trees (death) juxtaposed against the laurel bushes (immortality).
