Application Guide
We recommend blending onto clean and dry skin using your fingertip (please ensure hands are clean prior to applying product on your face). The reason we recommend using your fingertip to apply Shadow Magic is because the primer contains waxes which melt down with heat; this will help the product glide over the lid smoothly and with less ‘drag’ – especially if you live in a cold location.
Please be cautious about applying excess product – this will not help the application of eye shadow and may lead to the the eye shadow ‘caking’.
Our testing of Shadow Magic has shown that CREAM EYE SHADOWS tend to crease over this primer just as much as if it were not there. We recommend Shadow Magic for powder cosmetic use; it was not formulated for use under creams/gels/liquids etc so unfortunately we do not guarantee the same results compared to powder cosmetics.
You may find that depending on the type of eye shadow you are applying ‘patting’ will work better for some while others may apply better using a ‘sweeping’ motion with your eye shadow brush. We suggest testing the eye shadow over a bit of primer on the back of your hand if unsure.
Testing has shown that the primer is less effective for the following types of products:
- Glitter, large particle ‘sparkles’ etc that require a sticky base for adhesion.
- Low-budget eye shadow. Please note unfortunately we cannot guarantee the primer works equally between brands. There are many variables between different brand’s eye shadow ingredients and performance.
- Cream eye shadows, liquids, gels.

Once I was able to figure out the best way to apply this primer it worked quite well. I find warming my finger then rubbing it in a small circle I am then able to blend it on the lid much easier. Otherwise it can be a bit hard to smooth it on. This primer holds on to Femme Fatale eyeshadows well making them stand out without having to foil them, but if you want the eyeshadows to really stand out I think foiling them works best. But I am still learning the best way to use them.

This is a very good product at a terrific price. A little goes a long way and one pot lasts for ages. It can be a bit tricky to use until you get used to the texture, since it’s solid at room temperature and takes a while to get it to soften enough to apply evenly.
However, I have three different primers and this is certainly one of the better ones to hold loose shadows all day, which would otherwise crease very quickly on me (though I find my makeup creases more readily on some days rather than others, and I’m not quite sure why that is). Definitely worth purchasing.

Easy to use, a little goes a long way. I felt my shadows appeared more vibrant and lasted longer on my lids when I used Shadow Magic underneath. You will need to warm it a little in your fingers before applying as it is a balm but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to apply!

I reviewed the original version last year, but am updating my review now I’ve tried the revamped formula. The new version has the same staying power, but it’s softer and easier to work with. You simply need a small amount on the tip of your finger or a small spatula. Highly recommended.

First time I have used a primer, I started last summer in record NZ heatwave and this stayed put all through 30+ degrees week in, week out. Super impressed, Iasts ages, holds the shadow well and really helps to show off the duochromes.

This is my holy grail primer. For reference, I have oily AND hooded eyelids. This is a waxier primer than I was used to, but the formula means it holds my shadows tight and stays for 6-8 hours!

This stuff is amazing. I have hooded and oily lids, and the shadow stays put, which is really rare or me. It also makes the duochrome and shimmer colors pop

I love this primer! It’s very easy to use, and it really makes the duochromes pop. It only creases it I’m wearing eyeshadow for 10+ hours.

I use this primer for loose eye shadows as well as for pressed ones. It’s easy to use; the consistency is nice and it spreads easily. Colors get more vibrant and shimmers of duochrome shadows are more prominent on the lid. For me, the primer helps the eye look stay put the whole day; no creasing at all for me! Also, a little goes a long way, so the price is completely justified. Overall, I love it and can only recommend to try it!

This primer is pretty amazing, a little bit really does go a long way, and it has NEVER creased on me, even on the hottest of days, and I have fairly oily lids. My one and only complaint is that on cooler days it can be difficult for me to apply smoothly without it balling up, and also since it’s transparent it can be a little tough to tell how much I have on my eyelids, and where I’ve possibly missed. Overall a great primer though, it does what it’s supposed to, and exceeded my expectations.
It’s sticky enough to bring out the shine in duochromes beautifully, without overwhelming the base. Sort of like it’s in between regular primers and glitter adhesives, which makes it perfect for the vast majority of indie shadows and everyday use, unless you prefer a really intense shift.

I resisted for a long time, thinking that my mainstream primer worked just fine. It did, but nothing like the way shadow magic works. Someone else mentioned it being somewhere between regular primers and glitter glues in terms of intensity and stickiness, which I agree with completely. It makes shifts more intense without overpowering the base and allows you to still blend the shadows over it. You only need a little and it lasts all day even in hot or wet weather. It has quickly replaced my regular primer, especially for duochromes.
My only issue is with the jar it comes in. It’s just a regular 5g jar filled with product, so you have to dip in your finger to get the product out. I have to use my pinky to do so, not because my other fingers are too big, but because I end up with a lot of product under my nails when I use any other finger. It’s worth the hassle, but I’d prefer a different kind of jar or even a clamshell. Or perhaps something similar to OHWTO’s solid perfume sticks.

This is an excellent primer for people with greasier eyelids than the norm! My skin is combination and I’ve had difficulty keeping eyeshadows on for a full day with other primers, but Shadow Magic really is magical. A little definitely does go a long way, so it’s also great value for money.

This lasts forever! I’m really loving the update to being softer, much easier to use. I just swirl my finger and rub on my eye, you don’t need much. I have hooded eyes and this really helps with wear time and makes duochromes pop.

I have tried many different primers and this is by far the best. No shadow creeping into the crease in my eyelids. A beautifully light formula, which holds onto the Femme Fatale eyeshadows that I am so fond of and really makes them pop.

You get a lot of product for a decent price. It allows for an easy application and blending, and it manages to hold eyeshadow in place (except for the crease â I have oily lids and deep-set eyes, so eyeshadow always creases). I find it works best if i warm it up first, and then apply a very small quantity.
