“Right over the town is the ruin of Whitby Abbey, It is a noblest ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits” – Mina
Whitby Abbey, an ancient benedictine convent set on a headland over the seaside of Whitby and reached by the famous 199 steps or Church stairs, is one of Britain’s most imposing, romantic and atmospheric ruins in the UK. During a visit to the town, Stoker read a book in the local library on the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia and came upon the name of Dracula associated with the Hungarian wars with Turkey in the fifteenth century. While staying on the cliff overlooking the Abbey ruins, he became inspired by its Gothic splendour with the Church, tombstones, and occasional bats flying around, adding to the atmosphere.
