Pendle Witches – September 2023
Some of the most famous English witch trials included those of the Pendle witches in 1612. Twelve from the Pendle Hill county (regarded by law enforcement as a wild and lawless region) were accused of the murders of ten others, by the use of witchcraft. In 1612, every justice of the peace were ordered to compile a list of recusants (those who refund to attend the English Church and take communion) and while seeking out religious nonconformists, complaints against village healers for ‘injury by witchcraft’ were investigated. Many subsequently became implicated during this process; and although local healers were commonplace in village life, those who considered themselves witches who practiced healing magic for payment became involved by nature of the investigation.
Eleven went to trial in a group that included the Samlesbury witches; and ten of the Pendle witches were found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.
